“Ideally, you would have a mixture of perennials and annuals,” he
says.
For homeowners putting in
saltwater pools, choose hardy perennials that won’t get damaged
by salty splashes. Bertrand recommends daylilies, rosa-rugosa and
armeria. For chlorine pools, dogwood, hicks yew “Hicksii” and hydrangeas all work well.
For shady areas, Teodorescu recommends vibrant purple salvias
paired with white flowers or hibiscus. And unless you have a sprawling property, experts advise against
planting trees near the pool, as
their root systems could compromise the foundation and lining of the
pool, notes Bertrand.
“If you want the look of a tree,
you can use trees with small root
systems or a Hydrangea or Korean
Lilac, which have a smaller trunk,”
he adds.
